Telecommunications giant BT would seem to be the latest company that will follow the likes of Apple, Oracle, Microsoft and eBay, who want to take a legal pop at Google. In the filed suit, BT claims that the search giant has infringed patients owned by BT, which are used in the Android operating system.

According to the filling, BT has called Google to task over six of its patents. The infringed patents include ‘service provision for communications network’, ‘navigation information system’, ‘telecommunications apparatus and method’ and also ‘storage and retrieval of location based information in a distributed network of data storage devices’.

The documentation states that “Google has derived and will continue to derive substantial value from these products and services that incorporate BT’s patented technologies,” and to be fair to BT, the company cannot really be accused of patent “trolling”; it has a huge heritage, and over the years, the company has made considerable heavy investments in the communications.

If the lawsuit is awarded in BT’s favour, it will most probably mean that Google will be required to pay BT royalties for each Android device manufactured. I suppose we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
