MacBook Air update: Thunderbolt and Sandy Bridge coming this Wednesday?

Just bought yourself a shiny new MacBook Air? Be prepared to kick yourself: Apple looks set to launch an updated model this Wednesday. That’s according to rumour from renowned Apple insider ‘Chronic’.

The word is that the long-expected upgrade will arrive on the 11 and 13-inch MacBook Airs on the 15th of June, following both a 400,000 unit order placed by Apple for new machines and a tip-off that Apple Store employees will be attending lat night meetings on Tuesday.

So what’s involved? The update will be to bring the Air’s up to date with the MacBook Pro, by swapping out the old dual-core processors for the new Intel Sandy Bridge chipset. The Airs are also expected to receive the Thunderbolt port, which can transfer data to and from compatible devices at speeds of up to 10GB per second.
