Nokia’s ongoing patent battle with Apple has come to a sudden end, with Apple for once on the losing side and Nokia getting a much needed win in these troubling times for the company.
Nokia and Apple have been locking horns for some time now over numerous patent infringements on the iPhone, and stated that the handset infringed on ten patents Nokia holds for phone connectivity, relating to GSM and 3G networks, Wi-Fi and more.
Apple has after nearly 2 years finally stood down on the issue and instead of an injunction, Nokia has settled with the Cupertino company on a lump sum one-time payment and ongoing royalties payments.
Nokia’s CEO Stephen Elop made and official statement regarding the top secret agreement which states: “We are very pleased to have Apple join the growing number of Nokia licensees. This settlement demonstrates Nokia’s industry leading patent portfolio and enables us to focus on further licensing opportunities.”
Hopefully Nokia will be able to take the cash injection and help turn around the bad fortunes of the company over the last few years, and maybe bump up the production on some of its Windows Phone 7 handsets!
