HTC has today announced that the EVO 3D Android smartphone will be released in the UK this July, after going on sale in the US recently.
The announcement was made this morning at HTC’s press event in London, which many suspected to be the location for the unveiling of a new 10.1-inch tablet device. However, we were treated to HTC’s first ever 3D smartphone, the EVO 3D.
We first saw the EVO 3D at the CTIA Wireless event in Florida this March. Since then it has been released in the US, but we’ve still been waiting patiently here in the UK since HTC’s French division confirmed it would be coming to European shores.
HTC confirmed at the press event that there won’t be a huge selection of 3D content for the device initially. Their HTC Watch service will carry a select few 3D titles which can be rented or purchased for download to the phone, including the Green Hornet.
However, you will still be able to take photos and videos in 3D and play them back on the EVO 3D’s glasses-free 3D screen. The dual 5MP cameras on the back of the phone capture side-by-side 3D video, similar to the LG Optimus 3D.
Compared to the US model the specifications are virtually identical, with the only differences being in the UK compatible radio and a gold coloured band around the cameras (the US model has a red band, which we seem to prefer). Just to jog your memory, with the EVO 3D you’ll get a dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm processor, dual 5MP cameras, 1GB RAM, 4GB internal flash storage, Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi b/g/n, mini HDMI, 4.3-inch glasses-free 3D screen and a 1.3MP front camera for video calls. Android 2.3.3 (Gingerbread) and HTC’s latest Sense 3.0 user interface will be preloaded.
Despite being confirmed for a UK release, HTC haven’t yet confirmed the exact date or pricing. The handset will definitely land in the UK during July though, and we’ll keep you up to date on prices, network availability and that all important release date.
