Is Nintendo preparing a “Wii Mini” for a December 2012 launch?

  • by

Nintendo could be planning to launch a low price Wii Mini console next month to coincide with the launch of its new flagship Wii U, reports are suggesting.

While many will be undecided about the Wii U due to it being very new and at its highest price, a super cheap version of the existing Wii would still sell very well in certain regions. There’s no denying that people still absolutely love Wii Sports, Wii Fit and the other family fun games, and so it would make sense for Nintendo to keep offering this but at a lower price.

Nintendo World Report claims to have gotten word of a Wii Mini through a major retailer’s internal release schedule. The retailer, who is most likely US-based, lists the supposed console with a December 7th launch date:

Introducing the Wii Mini! Coming Dec 7 2012!

Comes with Sensor Bar, Nunchuk and Wii Remote Plus with Jacket.

Furthermore, Best Buy Canada has accidentally listed the new console on its website as launching on December 7th. An image of the packaging shows the console looking very slick in a new red and black finish.

The Wii console has already been redesigned once before, even if it was ever so slightly, so the Wii Mini would mark the second rejig in the design department. Conversely, Nintendo recently confirmed that it would be ceasing the development of Wii games in order to concentrate on its new console, so that could put a spanner in the works for this latest rumour. However, we can envision a Wii Mini still selling well in countries where the Wii U is too expensive, without the need for new games.

A low price miniature Wii could well extend the lifespan of the Wii console for a couple years to come, as well as boost games sales for developers. We think it’d be a good idea, do you?
