Samsung are due to announce the third member of their Galaxy Tab range later today at CTIA, the Galaxy Tab 8.9. However, thanks to PocketNow we’ve been treated to some early snapshots of the product info from Samsung’s booth at the event.
From the shots, we can see that the Galaxy Tab 8.9 will be rocking a 1GHz CPU along with a 1280×800 resolution WXGA screen panel. It’s light too, at only 470g, and only 8.6mm thick (that’s 137g lighter than the new iPad 2, and 0.2mm thinner by the way). Unfortunately there wasn’t any other specifications on show when the pictures were taken, but we expect to find out more later today.
We had already guessed that Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 8.9 would be running the now-standard tablet OS, Android 3.0 (otherwise known as Honeycomb), but what’s interesting is the skinned Samsung software that’s added on top of the Android OS. Much like the Motorola Xoom, Samsung have offered Homescreen Customisation which allows the user to add their most used programs and features to Android’s home screen, such as Gallery, Agenda and Email.
Samsung have also added their own spin on the OS’ multi-tasking, adding a “Mini Apps Tray” to the bottom of the main homescreen. Tapping the Mini Apps Tray will show up to 6 open applications as tiled images, each of which can be tapped to load the app full screen. It makes the OS look quite heavily skinned, but done right it could make the Galaxy Tab 8.9 more functional and easy to use than your average Android Tablet.
We expect Samsung to officially announce the Galaxy Tab 8.9 later today at the CTIA wireless event in Florida, so keep your eyes peeled for any more official information on the product here.
