Motorola to launch rugged 7-inch Android tablet

  • by

You know what it’s like: you spend all that cash on a brand new tablet PC and then drop it into a vat of sandy water immediately after leaving the store. Well fret not, clumsy gadgeteer; according to a source inside Motorola, the company is currently putting the final touches to a rugged Android tablet, in the style of the Motorola Defy.

The tablet, which will be aimed squarely at workers in the field, will be waterproof, dustproof and able to withstand a 4 foot drop without incident. It’ll even keep ticking in extreme temperatures. Spec seems to point to a 1GHz processor (with 1GB of RAM) and a measly 8GB of storage.

The main caveat to that durability, though, seems to be the operating system. The 7-inch device will run Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), rather than the tablet-centric Android 3.0 (Honeycomb). There’s currently no word on a release date, but we’ll keep you posted.
