Dell has launched what they are calling the “thinnest 15-inch notebook on the planet”, the XPS 15z.
Just how thin is it? I hear you ask. 0.97-inches thick is your answer, and in terms of laptop thickness that’s not ground breaking. In fact, it’s the same thickness as the Macbook Pro released in 2008, and absolutely nowhere near the waif Macbook Air released earlier this year.
Dimensions aside, the XPS 15z still packs a high specification – The entry model features a Core i5-2410M processor (@ 2.3GHz default, can be upped to 2.9GHz thanks to Intel’s Turbo Boost), 6GB of DDR3 RAM, Backlit “chicklet” keyboard, GeForce GT525M graphics, 750GB HDD and a 64WHr battery.
If you’re willing to shell out $300 more, you’ll bag yourself an upgrade to 8GB of RAM and a Core i7-2620M (2.7GHz – 3.4GHz with Turbo Boost). All models are equipped with a 15.6-inch 1920 x 1080 resolution screen. So all in all it’s a pretty meaty spec’d notebook, just a shame it’s not as thin as Dell are claiming.
Unfortunately for US and European readers, the XPS 15z is currently only available in Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Taiwan. We’d expect such a talked-up product to make it across to more countries in the very near future though.
Update: The XPS 15z is now available in the UK, with the entry level model priced at £899, and the top-end i7 model coming in at £1199.
