Vodafone no longer charging for internet tethering

UK network Vodafone has announced that it will be banishing internet tethering fees for UK mobile customers.

Tethering is the act of connecting a mobile phone to a laptop or computer, and seeding the phone’s internet connection to the PC. It’s typically used for those who need to use a laptop or netbook on the go, but don’t have a mobile broadband dongle or access to Wi-Fi.

All UK networks currently charge for the privilege of tethering your mobile data to another device, but Vodafone has today it will be axing the charges – for customers on a new set of tariffs at least.

Vodafone has announced that with some new tariffs starting today, they won’t differentiate between the internet you use on your phone, and any internet you may tether to another device. Existing customers will also be able to switch plans (as long as the plans are the same or a higher monthly cost) to benefit from no tethering fees.

Do be warned however, that using your mobile phone’s internet through another device such as a laptop will see you go through your data allowance much faster. Vodafone will charge £5 extra on top of your monthly bill per 250MB you go over your allowance, which isn’t too bad in fairness.
