It’s that unfortunate time of year for English football fans, as our domestic leagues have just come to a close. We’re left with that horrible time over summer where there’s no league football to watch, counting down the days until the new season begins.
However, fortunately for iPhone and iPod Touch users there are plenty of apps available to give you your footy fix and keep you in the loop with your favourite teams over the summer break. We’ve hunted high and low and picked out five of the best for you.
LiveScore – Free
Powered by the famous Livescore.com service, LiveScore is a free app for iPhone and iPod Touch which brings you up to the minute live scores from football matches all over the world. We’ve been using it for the past season and it’s been an invaluable app to keep open in the background on match days.
Scores come in from all the main leagues across Europe as well as friendlies and internationals, and even more. The creators of the app have designed it to ensure that score updates use minimal data, so you can leave it open without worrying about going over your data limit. Best of all – it’s free!
Sky Sports Live Football – Free
Sky’s Live Football app is another fantastic free app for the iPhone and iPod Touch. You can customise your home screen, adding your favourite team(s) from all the English and Scottish leagues, as well as the top leagues in Spain, Germany, France, Italy and Holland. Once you’ve picked your team, the home screen will display latest scores, recent results and your club’s standing in the league table.
If that’s not enough for you, you get the latest football news scrolling along the bottom of the screen just like on the Sky Sports News TV channel. There are also tabs for forthcoming fixtures, a 3D pub finder and news, video highlights, Live TV (with subscription) and the option to listen to Sky Sports News Radio.
Flick Kick Football – Free/59p
Flick Kick Football by well known iPhone games developer PikPok is by far the best football game for iPhone and iPod touch in our opinion. With the flick of a finger you bend the ball into the back of the net (in theory), but you’ve got a goalkeeper and an increasing number of strategically placed defenders to cope with.
It’s by far the most addictive football game on the iPhone and is very easy and fun to play. You’ve got several modes including Arcade, Practice and Time Attack to play with, as well as a brand spanking new Multiplayer mode which allows you to compete online against other gamers. Simply great!
Football Rumours/Football Rumours Lite – 59p/Free
What do you do when the football season ends? You eagerly try to find out which players are transferring, which clubs are paying over the top for certain players (cough, Fernando Torres) and more importantly, who is your favourite club signing. Football Rumours is a fantastic yet simple app to keep track of the world of player transfers, signings and club news.
Both the free and the paid apps allow you to view the latest football gossip in a simple timeline, as well as adding your favourite team to a separate tab. You can set push notifications up, so if there’s some really big football news, you’ll get a little notification on the app icon, just like when you get a text message for example. Our only gripe is that you can only choose from the big teams, and our beloved Southampton FC isn’t on there.
Football on the T.V – £1.19
If you’re always wanting to watch the football, but don’t know who’s going to be playing on the TV next, then Football on the TV is for you. It’s a neat little app, which upon opening will show you which football games are due to be on TV over the next 5 days. You can scroll through week by week to see who will be playing, at what time and what channel the game is going to be on.
You can set your favourite team in a separate tab and view all their upcoming matches, including under 21’s games if you’ve selected an international team. Our favourite feature is the reminder tab which lets you add the match time and date straight into your iPhone’s calendar, and have it remind you about the big game up to 24 hours before kickoff. You’ll never have to miss a game again!
