Nokia has unveiled a new portable speaker system which uses NFC tech to pump out tunes without the need for wires.
The Nokia Play 360 is a compact speaker system with both Bluetooth and NFC (Near Field Communications) wireless connectivity. Speakers point in all directions, providing a 360 degree sound to fill the room, and obviously give the device its name.
Shortly after announcing the new N9 smartphone that runs a new MeeGo operating system and has NFC capabilities, Nokia announced the Play 360 to go with it. In the demonstration video (see below) released for the speaker, we see our man simply touch his Nokia N9 onto the NFC badge of the speaker, et voila! They’re paired and the speaker can wirelessly play tunes from the phone.
There’s of course Bluetooth connectivity also on board, so you don’t have to have the very latest smartphone to make use of the Play 360 speaker. If you really want to use wires, there’s also a 3.5mm audio jack for connecting via an AUX cable.
As Pocket-Lint have pointed out, though this technology seems very snazzy and new, it’s been done before. Bluetooth specialists Parrot released a set of speakers back in 2008 that worked in the same way back in 2008, albeit a much more simplified version with less advanced mobile phones.
Still, this piece of kit looks the part and there’s no denying NFC technology is very cool indeed. We’re looking forward to getting our hands on the Nokia N9 and its MeeGo OS as soon as we can.
