Nokia will be releasing four new Symbian handsets

  • by

Nokia have got a lot going on at the moment, with the release of the N9 running MeeGo and their own WP7 handsets coming soon. But they still have time to throw in some Symbian running handsets, much to our despair.

Symbian is a rather outdated OS and although the new overlay for Belle – the next incarnation of the OS – looks good (it has a slight MeeGo look to it), it still just does not have the developer base to keep up with the other main OS players.

However, it does look as though Nokia have upped their game for the latest Symbian handsets.  All four new handsets will pack a 1GHz processor and the latest version of Symbian. The rumoured phones are the Nokia 701, 700, 600 and the Nokia 500. It’s not clear whether the N5 was one of these rumoured phones,  but we do have some specs of these up coming handsets.

The Nokia 701 features a 1GHz processor, the newest version of Symbian (Belle), an 8-megapixel camera, a 3.5-inch LCD display and is listed as the C7’s successor. This is the daddy of the bunch.

The Nokia 700, (codename Zeta) also packs Belle and a 1GHz chip and is touted as the “the thinnest smartphone ever”. Big claims indeed. It’s also said to be packing a 3.2-inch AMOLED screen.

The Nokia 600 (codename Cindy) packs NFC (Near Field Communications), a 1Ghz processor, 5-megapixel camera, FM radio, a 3.2-inch AMOLED screen and an “attractive price”.

Lastly, there’s the Nokia 500 Fate which still packs a 1GHz chip and apparently a 5-megapixel camera.

So its a good choice of a few different Symbian devices, but what is Nokia hoping to prove by releasing them? The only thing I can see is Nokia seem content to keep supporting a old outdated OS, rather than take a leap of faith with MeeGo. We think they should MeeGO for gold.
