Facebook with Skype integration to be launched this Wednesday

  • by

Facebook will be launching video calling within your browser this Wednesday, thanks to a partnership with video calling giants Skype.

We heard last week that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg hinted to the press they would be launching something “awesome” this week, which of course set the speculation wheels in motion. Could it be the long awaited Facebook app for iPad? Could it be a specialised photo sharing app just for iPhone users?

TechCrunch are almost certain that Facebook are set to launch some “awesome” new video chat software, powered by Skype, which will work within your browser when you visit facebook.com. The information comes from a source with good knowledge of the partnership between Facebook and Skype.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg will take to the stage in Palo Alto this Thursday to announce the new software, which will also include a desktop app, or client. It’s not clear yet if the app will cover the video calling aspect only, or if it will be the first Facebook app for desktop, giving you the full social network experience through an app.

We could certainly see video calling with Facebook coming to the smartphone apps; more and more smartphones nowadays have the front facing video camera, and who doesn’t have the Facebook app for their smartphone? It would be a great move for Microsoft and Skype, and would no doubt expand their user base massively thanks to Facebook’s 750 million active users.
