Apple iPad 3 release to come after ‘iPad 2 Plus’ launch in September?

  • by
Despite rumours that the iPad 3 will arrive this year, we’re still not convinced. Also on our side is FBR Capital Markets analyst Craig Berger, who has released a new report claiming that Apple will launch an updated version of the iPad 2 – an ‘iPad 2 Plus’ – this year, ahead of the proper iPad 3’s launch in 2012.

“There are some indications from the supply chain that Apple may look to introduce an ‘iPad 2 Plus’ device as they put out request for quotes from various component suppliers for this marginally different device,” says Berger. The report coincides with other gossip that the iPad 2 will receive an update to bring features that some people were expecting from it on launch.

Chief among those is an updated display. Berger suggests the iPad 2 Plus will boast something similar to the iPhone 4’s Retina Display, as well as larger storage capacity. If Apple does as Berger predicts, it’ll likely happen in September when the iPhone 5 is pipped to launch. This will also mean big business for Apple simply because it’ll reignite interest in the iPad ahead of Christmas.

Do you think this theory has legs, or will Apple leave the iPad 2 as is until the launch of the iPad 3? Let us know on the Gadget Helpline Twitter feed.
