AOL launch PLAY app for iPhone owners, music lovers

AOL is breaking into the mobile music industry with a new app for iPhone: PLAY by AOL Music.

The app was released for Android phones and tablets back in March of this year for free, and now the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad version has landed in the App Store, again for free.

PLAY takes the standard music player and adds a social experience to it – sharing music, customising stations, Facebook and Twitter integration and friends are all in the mix. It seems like AOL have aimed for an “instagram for music” type of app here.

You can create yourself a profile and tailor your music player to your own needs, then add friends from Facebook and Twitter and “follow” what they’re listening to. You’ll also be able to share what you like hearing via Facebook and Twitter.

AOL will be offering over 47,000 SHOUTcast radio stations as well as an extensive collection of music that can be listened to. The latter can be found in the main menu under the “CD Listening Party” option, something that AOL will be updating frequently with new music for its listeners.

Similar to the native iOS music player, PLAY has 5 main areas which can be found at the bottom of the screen. Music gives you access to simply play the media on your iPhone, Feed will show you what your friends and followers are listening to, PLAY gives you access to full albums and exclusive content for streaming, Alerts tells you what’s new in the app and finally Profile gives you access to your PLAY profile info.

The app seems pretty intuitive and neat, though unfortunately it’s currently only available in the US. We’ll be checking it out as soon as it hits the UK though, will you? Let us know what you think of PLAY by AOL Music by adding a comment below.
