A day after the official launch of Apple’s new operating system OS X Lion, the Cupertino company has announced that they have sold more than 1 million copies in just 24 hours – a new record for the company.
Lion finally went on sale via Apple’s Mac App store yesterday, the company declared that customers are buying the new OS “faster than any other OS release in Apple’s history.
“Lion is off to a great start, user reviews and industry reaction have been fantastic,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide product marketing. “Lion is a huge step forward; it’s not only packed with innovative features but it’s incredibly easy for users to update their Macs to the best OS we’ve ever made.”
Lion is the first OS that Apple has been released via a digital download through their new Mac App Store. The company does plan to offer the OS through physical channels, with a USB version for $69 – which is considerably more than the digital version.
Apple reckons that the new OS is their best yet with “over 250 new features,” notable new features include full-screen applications, a myriad of multitouch controls, system resumer, auto save for app data, a completely re-worked file sharing system called Air Drop, and Launchpad.
The new OS has achieved 9,376 user ratings on the Mac App Store, with 2,091 written reviews – with a average rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars.
This is the first time since Snow Leopard that Apple has announced sale figures for a new OS update. Leopard shifted 2 million copies in its first weekend on sale – so Lion is well on course to match and, most probably, beat that record.
