Apple has released the fourth Beta version of the forthcoming iOS 5 iPhone software to developers and tinkerers, interestingly this time via OTA (over the air) download.
Around 2 weeks after the third Beta version was released, Apple informed developers that the next stage was available to download. The update could be installed in the usual manner by plugging in to iTunes, or by downloading directly over the air from an option in the Settings menu.
Over the air updates could mean that customers would be able to download and update their iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad when connected to Wi-Fi, all without the need to plug in to their computers.
As this feature is currently only in the testing phase, there has been some teething problems. Those who perform the update from Beta 3 to Beta 4 over the air will lose all of their stored photos from the device. Slightly strange, but Apple say a full re-sync will solve this problem and no doubt the feature will work flawlessly when the software is released to the public.
When it goes live, iOS 5 will bring a host of new features to iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad users such as the new iMessage chat service, Reminders and deep Twitter integration.
New beta versions have been rolled out on an almost two-weekly basis for the past month or two. We are expecting 5 or 6 beta versions to be released before Apple perfect the software and make it public.
Loads of new features were discovered in the last Beta, number 3. You can create your own custom vibrate tones, customise notification tones and use new gesture controls.
