After pioneering the OLED screen a few years ago, LG has decided to step things up a gear (and up a few sizes) and announce a monster 55-inch OLED TV for sale next year.
Since putting OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) technology into production a few years back, LG have managed to release some 15 and 19 inch OLED TVs as well as using the technology in mobile phone screens such as the Samsung Galaxy S II. By using OLED technology TVs are able to be ultra-thin – even thinner than LED sets – while producing an incredibly bright, colourful and sharp HD image.
The trouble with OLED technology is the cost. You can pick up a 15-inch OLED TV from LG now for a cool £1500. Yep, you read that right..£1500. How much is a 55-inch model going to set us back LG? Surely this television is only going to be for the very wealthy.
LG CEO Kwon Young-Soo announced that the 55-inch OLED behemoth would be sold mid-way through next year. Kwon also said that LG would be focussing their OLED screen technology on large TVs and moving away from using them in tablets and smartphones, as he feels that AH-IPS screens are better suited.
We’re keeping our fingers crossed tightly that OLED technology takes off well enough to warrant a severe drop in price. These televisions are really beautiful and have to be seen in the flesh to be believed. Now, LG, please send us one of these 55-inch beauties to review next year?
