One of the main competitors to Apple’s tablet dominance is the Samsungs Galaxy Tab 10.1 and it’s finally seeing its UK release next week after a long gestation in development.
If you are planning to get the Android Honeycomb offering from Samsung you will be able to get the tablet a day early through retailers Currys and PC World at their flagship store on London’s Tottenham Court Road.
The official release date is pegged for August 4th nationwide, but if you live in London you can get yourself down to Tottenham Court Road at 5pm to get your hands on the iPad competitor a day before the rest of the country.
The sequel to the Samsung Galaxy Tab, the 10.1, is one of the top tablets to take on Apple’s iPad. Originally it was unveiled at the Mobile World Congress in February.
But when Apple unveiled the new iPad 2, Samsung were genuinely surprised by what Apple offered a few months later. So Sammy did a rather cringe-worthy u-turn and made some drastic changes to make the tablet more competitive with Apple’s iPad 2 offering, namely shaving off several millimetres to make it the “world’s thinnest tablet”.
Gladly Samsung has managed to make the tablet much thinner than version one, which actually went on sale for a while, and importantly managed to get their entry-level version retailing at the same price of the iPad 2 – £399. They did have to take away the rather impressive 8-megapixel camera on the rear for a 3-megapixel offering though.
With the 3-megapixel rear mounted camera to feature 720p HD video recording capabilities and be joined by a forward facing 2-megapixel webcam, the Galaxy Tab 10.1’s impressive spec sheet is further plumped by a 10.1-inch WXGA display at 1280 x 800p resolution with 16, 32 and 64GB storage options.
“The Galaxy Tab 10.1 is the latest example of Samsung’s ongoing innovation in this market and commitment to the Android platform,” declared Simon Stanford, Managing Director, Mobile, Samsung UK and Ireland. He added: “Our Galaxy family all feature a premium design, excellent screens and are packed with compelling entertainment features. We plan to deliver exciting new user experiences and lead the tablet market in the months and years to come.”
