It looks as though Samsung’s successful Galaxy S II smartphone will be making it to the U.S. after all, but it’s had a makeover and received a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. What!
Tech website BGR has uncovered the new device and posted pics online showing off its model number, redesigned back cover and slide-out QWERTY keyboard.
The SGH-I927 will be exclusive to the American network AT&T, though the release date is currently unknown. Looking at the front you’d be forgiven for thinking this is the same handset that has been available in the UK and Europe for some time now, but Samsung have managed to cram a sliding keyboard into the device for U.S. customers (the lucky so-and-so’s).
BGR reports that this particular handset is slightly thicker than the regular Galaxy S II but not by much, so we’re glad to hear the same slim form factor will be retained well.
The rear casing of the handset now features an odd dimpled finish which we’re not too sold on just yet, but the same great 8MP camera is still there meaning you’ll get great snaps as well as Full HD 1080p video capture.
Specifications would appear to be almost, if not, identical to the standard Galaxy S II. That means the same 1.2GHz dual-core Exynos processor, 1GB RAM and stunning Super AMOLED Plus screen. Android Gingerbread and Samsung’s TouchWiz 4.0 user interface run the handset software-wise.
The Galaxy S II has become one of the best selling smartphones of all time despite not being offered by a single network in the United States. Could U.S. customers see this device go on sale before the original S2 does?
We very much doubt that the SGH-I927 and its slide-out QWERTY keyboard will ever see the light of a UK or European shop, but we can hope.
