Facebook’s never been a stranger to a spot of controversy regarding users’ privacy, but now the social network’s gotten itself into hot water with an entire nation. The company’s pioneering face-recognition tech, which allows users to upload photos of friends and have them tagged automatically, is causing issues…
Germany has claimed that the tech is a danger to anonymity, and has declared the face detection tech to be illegal. The ruling means that Facebook will have to remove the feature or face a fine. Facebook’s PR agency has retorted, saying that FB “firmly rejected any accusations that we are not complying with our obligations to European Union data protection laws.”
Germany’s security laws and protocols are notoriously strict, so is it any wonder that the face-detection feature has caused problems? Or is the country just overreacting? Let us know your thoughts on the Gadget Helpline Twitter feed.
