Canon announces EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R

If you’ve been thinking about upgrading your current DSLR you might be interested in the two new high-end models that have been announced by Canon.

The popular camera manufacturer have unveiled two new models; the EOS 5DS and also the EOS 5DS R. There is very little difference between the two, but they both pack a punch in terms of features and performance – as you’d expect from such a recognised product.

When comparing the differences between the new models, it essentially only consists of one element – the EOS 5DS has a low-pass filter which essentially blurs the image slightly which reduces moire patterns that sometimes appear on certain pictures.

Both cameras feature a 50.6 megapixel sensor; this is the highest sensor for any Canon DSLR or in-fact for any other full frame DSLR camera. They feature a 61 point AF system, with 41 cross-type AF points and feature the latest DIGIX 6 image processor.

Other features include 150,000-pixel RGB+IR 252-zone metering sensor, built-in intervalometer and bulb timer to enable the capture of time-lapse images and long-exposure images, 100% field of view through the viewfinder, ISO 100-6400 range (expandable to 12,800), dual SD and CF card slots, and a 3.2-inch, 1040k dot display.

Unfortunately, anyone who is perhaps thinking about using this camera for video recording should probably look elsewhere. Considering these cameras have massive potentially for any videographer out there, they are only capable of recording at a disappointing 1080p30 or 720p60. The cameras also lack mic input or a HDMI connection. While we understand that these cameras are intended for photography, there has been a massive uptake in professionals using them to capture video too.

Putting the disappointment of the video features aside, if you are interested in getting hold of the new models from Canon, they will be available from June this year with the EOS 5DS model costing $3,699 and the EOS 5DS R $3,899 both for the body only.
