With reboots and re-imaginings seeming to be the current trend in Hollywood another title has been thrown into the arena and it’s one of our most featured fight franchises. Yes, that’s right. MORTAL KOMBAT is coming back for one more round!
Having just unleashed the tenth title in the linear timeline of the Mortal Kombat gaming series (Mortal Kombat X) there really is no better time to break the news (and some bones) and one of the rising names in movie making, James Wan, is already officially signed on to produce it.
Mortal Kombat has hit the big screen a couple of times before with a first movie released in 1995 which was based on the themes and characters in the popular game that came out in arcades and 16-bit consoles three years prior. The picture boasted little star power aside from former Highlander actor Christopher Lambert in the role of Raiden and despite the fights being pretty crazy and fast-paced it lacked some of the game’s graphic violence. This somewhat tame approach may have been to market the film to a wider audience after the game was slammed by parents for its blood-thirsty nature (why the parents were allowing kids to play it didn’t seem to be the focus of the backlash.)
What was most famous about the cult flick was its frantic theme song which came at the same time as the mainstream rise of techno. (For gamers of a certain age, we’ve embedded the video below for your nostalgic enjoyment!) A sequel called Mortal Kombat Annihilation was released in 1997 and was considered a fatality for the franchise in film form.
Kick it forward 20 years and the tournament looks to get a second life in cinemas, and James Wan who will be producing the remake was one of the writers behind the original SAW movie and also directed it. This guy knows how to flawlessly script and shoot an ultra-violent death scene – making him an ideal choice for ensuring that the Mortal Kombat movie series returns to its true gory glory.
Wan has also produced and directed other top horrors including The Conjuring and Insidious and knows about action, having recently directed The Fast and Furious 7 and the upcoming Aquaman movie.
No plot details have been revealed yet regarding the next Mortal Kombat movie but it’s confirmed to be a total restart. With two decades of characters and storyline to source from the possibilities are endless and this is a reboot we’re actually interested in seeing done right.
