A service has been launched that should help seriously reduce the number of nuisance calls for mobile phone users, and all it takes is just one text.
The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) with support of Ofcom set up the scheme whereby texting TPS along with your email address to the code 78070 you can be added to a database of millions of other mobile owners who are regularly pestered by marketing calls and unsolicited sales calls from unknown numbers – a practice which is actually illegal. Numbers will then be put on a ‘no-call’ list so that they won’t be contacted by businesses reported to the TPS as dodgy.
TPS hopes that the text-to-register service will see a reduction in this kind of cold calling and customers should notice a difference in the frequency of these unwanted calls within a few days of opting out (calls only – this does not yet extend to unwanted texts). Most people can quickly and easily send a text so this can be signed up to very simply, the ease of which should encourage more mobile users to do it – and best of all it’s completely free to set up.
No calling to or from the Ofcom backed Telephone Preference Service is involved in the setup – unlike a similar service called Cold Call Elimination Ltd. which promised no cold callers, yet broke its own promise by cold calling its own registered paying customers, even claiming to be from TPS.
