London is known for its big red buses, and why not, because they’re awesome from getting from a to b and relatively cheap. Hell, they’re kind of a national treasure.
In a move to make them cooler, Boris Johnson, London’s off-the-wall mayor who can only be described as ‘kind of fuzzy’, has deemed it necessary to install free wi-fi in every big red bus as part of the city’s new incentive to bring wireless to all by 2012, in time for them Olympics then.
The plan is to start with wi-fi on bus stops, as they’re often positioned close enough to the required infrastructure cabling to make an access point. The next step will be getting access points on the buses themselves.
This isn’t the first time London has considered introducing wi-fi on public transport, as plans are going around to get connectivity onto the underground service and onto street objects such as lamp posts.
You may have heard that Virgin is getting on board with wi-fi in the capital too, bringing in free wi-fi to certain parts of the city. If this all comes true, badman Boris’s secret wi-fi plan may come to be sooner than we think.
