Details of the hotly anticipated iPad 3 and its rumoured Retina Display screen have leaked from a very reputable source, sending Apple Fanboys into a frenzy everywhere.
The Wall Street Journal reports that the next iPad will feature a screen resolution that is double that of the current iPad 2 – a whopping high definition resolution of 2048 x 1536.
Despite the huge jump in resolution, the screen size will remain the same; 9.7-inches. This means that the pixels-per-inch density will be much higher, resulting in what could be the sharpest, brightest screen ever seen on a tablet device.
WSJ quotes several people who are “familiar with Apple’s situation” when speaking of the supposed screen specifications. Their sources also confirm that Apple have already placed orders for the screens, 1.5 million parts to be precise, indicating that the Cupertino company are gearing up to manufacture the iPad 3 very soon.
The hot topic on everyone’s lips right now is the release date of the iPad 3. It was initially thought that we would see the new tablet in time for Christmas this year, which would make plenty of sense. However, it has recently come to light that Apple has struggled to gain the quality components in the quantity that they require in time, possibly pushing the release back until early 2012.
Samsung has been the screen manufacturer of choice for Apple for both the original iPad and the iPad 2, though in light of the two companies’ recent legal battle, we feel that Apple may look elsewhere. Sharp and LG are currently contending for the top spot to supply Apple with HD quality screens for a next-generation iPad.
