Today’s App Of The Day has a distinctly sporty theme, with a social networking and news twist.
If you’re a keen Twitter user and you love keeping up to date with your favourite sports and sports personalities, then Tweetsport for iPhone is an app that you really need to check out.
Available now and completely free on iPhone and iPod Touch, Tweetsport brings the very latest in sports news, views, results, headlines and more, straight to your screen.
The app works similarly to other Twitter apps you’ll find on the iPhone, though the timeline is customised to receive the very latest in sports news from a multitude of different sports-related Twitter accounts.
The makers of Tweetsport have scoured the Twittersphere to bring the very best in sporty tweeting to your iPhone, with content coming from the BBC, Twitter, Daily Express, Daily Mail, ESPN, Football 365, TalkSport and much, much more. Sports personalities are also there – you’ll get updates from Premier League Footballers, Athletes, Pundits, Sports Journalists and Commentators, including Robbie Savage who, at present cannot be turned off.
The app covers news from Football, Motorsport, Tennis, Golf, Rugby, Olympics, Cricket, Athletics, Cycling, Horse Racing and Swimming, so you’ll be very hard pushed to not find the sports news you’re after, unless of course you’re looking for the latest lacrosse news.
Four simple filters sit along the bottom of the screen, allowing you to view tweets specifically from the sporting media, players or just all. There’s also a filter for Headlines, which gives you the very latest in sports news, game previews and even live news. Right now you can view a live news feed for County Cricket, provided by the Guardian – pretty cool!
Tweetsport isn’t just a timeline for sporting tweets, it also features a bit of Twitter integration. Tapping on a particular tweet will allow you to retweet or reply to it, as well as choosing to follow a particular account. This is particularly good for adding your favourite sporty tweeters to your own Twitter feed.
With the app being free, unfortunately you get the slight burden of the iAds banner near the top of the screen. This really isn’t too bad and doesn’t get in the way of your reading, but if you want to get rid of the ads you can upgrade to a Premium version for 69p.
The Premium version doesn’t just get rid of the adverts either, oh no. You’ll also receive the ability to filter sports, so your timeline contains only tweets about your favourite sports. For your 69p you’ll also get a search feature, which comes in handy for further filtering your tweets to a specific team, player or event. Unfortunately the Premium version doesn’t give you the ability to filter out Robbie Savage’s tweets, though perhaps we can start a petition to get this to happen?
You can download Tweetsport for free right now on the iPhone and iPod Touch from the App Store. Let us know what you think via the comments below, or by tweeting us @Gadget_Helpline.
