September Release For Sony’s S1 Android Tablet

  • by

With last week’s announcement that HP is getting out of the tablet wars – a different tech giant, Sony, is finally ready to show their hand.

Sony S1

Their S1 has been teased for months now, but Sony are gearing up for the release of their first Android Honeycomb tablet this autumn.

The 9.4 inch tablet sports a 1280×768 screen and will be released in the first two weeks of September according to latest reports.

The S1 will come with Honeycomb 3.1 – with an eye towards upgrading to Ice Cream Sandwich once it’s available.

Sony has stated that the tablet’s focus will be using it to control all devices in the home via wireless networks or the integrated infrared zapper.

You’ll be able to “throw” media to other DLNA-compatitible devices in the home – whether it be made Sony or someone else.

The slate will come with a 3-megapixel camera on the front and a 5-megapixel camera on the rear. Whether these are made by Sony is unclear at the moment.

Sony plans to support the tablet with a number of accessories including wireless keyboard, a dock setup and micro-USB to USB host dongle’s.

They have given some details on the “TruBlack” screen technology which is supposed to provide better colours with less glare.

It will, of course, come with all of Sony’s preinstalled software including Playstation Certified Gaming, Music Unlimited, Movie Unlimited and book services too.

The only thing we don’t know is the price. We’ve heard rumours of £490 – but nothing has been announced. Are you waiting for Sony’s S1 tablet ? Let us know how much you think it will be by tweeting us.
