The UK’s first Glasses-Free 3DTV has arrived in the form of the 55-inch ‘55ZL2’ beast from Toshiba.
Toshiba unveiled the new television at the IFA Consumer Electronics event in Berlin yesterday. The 55-incher boasts some of the best specifications you’ll find on a 3D TV, while losing the need for those inconvenient 3D glasses.
The 55ZL2 is a ‘Smart’ 3D TV, so you’ll be able to connect it to the internet and browse the web, download apps and play games as well as viewing that 3D content.
It also features Toshiba’s Resolution+ HD upscaling technology, face tracking and 2D to 3D conversion capabilities, meaning you’ll be able to watch just about anything in 3D.
Face tracking might seem a strange feature to find on a TV, but Toshiba have used it very intelligently to ensure you’ll always get the best 3D image no matter where you go in the room. A camera in the TV will track your face, so if you move to a different seat in the room the TV will adjust the 3D image to make it optimal for your viewing angle.
“Glasses-free 3D images are delivered through a combination of Toshiba’s innovative display technologies and CEVO ENGINE multi-core processing platform” Says Toshiba, who are describing this particular TV as “the most advanced TV to date”.
Lenticular Lenslets provide auto-stereoscopic 3D pictures without the need to put a pair of 3D goggles on your face, and the technology also allows for nine different viewing angles, so the whole family can join in and enjoy the 3D action.
“Built to provide exceptional all round performance, the ZL2 removes all barriers to enjoying 3D entertainment – offering viewers the freedom to experience a next-generation home cinema experience in the most natural, comfortable, and enjoyable way,” – a statement from Toshiba’s press event at the IFA event yesterday.
Toshiba says that we should be able to buy the 55ZL2 in the UK this December, just in time to watch those great Christmas movies in glorious Glasses-Free 3D TV. This sort of awesome tech isn’t going to come cheap though, so get saving your pennies! Toshiba will be announcing a retail price for the set closer to December.
