LG Optimus 3D 2 in Development

LG are already hard at work creating a successor to the first 3D smartphone, the LG Optimus 3D.

Speaking exclusively to UK site Pocket-Lint, one of LG’s product developers for the Optimus 3D, Dr Henry Noh, confirmed that the electronics manufacturer is already making another 3D Optimus smartphone.

The main focus point for the Optimus 3D 2 is thickness and style, says Noh. LG are well aware that the Optimus 3D is quite chunky for a smartphone, and not all that attractive. This is something the company aims to remedy with the next 3D smartphone; they say they are aiming for a handset that is just 7mm thick – that’s far slimmer than the iPhone 4.

“These days, all the phones look the same. They have a huge screen – 4.3-inches is normal these days – and next year they’re moving even larger. And they have a fixed number of touch buttons. They’re the same thickness. They have the same camera. And even the same OS. It’s so boring.” Said Noh in an interview with Pocket-Lint.

Dr Noh confirmed that LG are already developing a second 3D smartphone, and that it could go on sale sometime in 2012.

He says that the trend for smartphones next year will be thickness – manufacturers like Nokia, Samsung and Apple will all be trying to make the thinnest smartphone possible. Noh says that the top smartphones will be around 6mm in thickness come next year, but throw in some 3D technology and you’re going to end up with a thicker phone. Noh is confident they will be able to make a 3D phone that is just 7mm thick, and 90% of the public won’t notice the difference.

We tested the Optimus 3D when it first came out earlier this year and we were very impressed. LG is bang on the money though, thickness and style seems to have been sacrificed to fit in the 3D tech. We can’t wait to see a stylish and slim 3D smartphone, can you?
