Sony Ericsson’s Playstation-certified Xperia Play gaming smartphone is set to receive a big update to its 5-megapixel camera, adding in HD video recording.
Released earlier this year in March, the Xperia Play has lacked one major feature found on almost all smartphones released this year – HD quality video recording.
All that is set to change in the next couple of weeks, as Sony Ericsson aim to push out a software update to Android Gingerbread 2.3.4. This update will bring High Definition video recording to the 5-megapixel camera on the rear of the phone, giving your video clips a nice 720p resolution at 30 frames per second.
We’re not entirely sure why Sony Ericsson left this feature out on the Xperia Play in the first place, let alone left it this long to add it. Either way we’re happy for owners of the phone, as this feature really bumps up the quality of the video camera.
The phone, which is the first ever Playstation-certified smartphone, is capable of playing classic Playstation One titles such as Crash Bandicoot and Silent Hill. Beneath the 4-inch touchscreen display is a slide-out Playstation control pad, featuring a D-pad and the iconic 4 Playstation buttons. Left and Right triggers are located on the left edge of the phone to give the familiar feel of the Playstation controller.
A developer over at the XDA Developers forum has already installed the update on their Xperia Play, and treated us to a demo video to show off the quality. What did they record? Their cat, of course. Check out the video below.
