Motorola Xoom 2 Media Edition – 8.2-inch Android Honeycomb Tablet Uncovered

  • by

With two leaks in the space of 24 hours or less, Motorola’s new Android-powered Xoom tablets are leaking more than a very leaky tap.

We reported earlier that Motorola’s Xoom 2 tablet had leaked; a 10.1-inch Android Honeycomb device with improved specifications and a whole new design. Alongside it was a smaller tablet of a similar design, which engadget reported to have the codename of ‘Fleming’.

Well, we’ve uncovered more information on that smaller tablet for you. The Motorola ‘Fleming’ is to be sold as the Motorola Xoom 2: Media Edition; another Android Honeycomb tablet with an 8.2-inch display size. At slightly smaller than the iPad 2 and bigger than the 7-inch tablets like the HTC Flyer and Samsung Galaxy Tab, this one’s got us very interested.

Thisismynext quotes a ‘very trustworthy source’ who has given them the low-down on this tablet. It has an 8.2-inch IPS (In Plane Switching) screen capable of High Definition quality resolutions. The same IPS technology is used in both Apple iPad tablets, and helps to improve the viewing angle of the screen.

The Xoom 2 Media Edition is not only smaller than its bigger brother, it’s also much lighter at just 0.95 pounds (430g) – a good 177g lighter than the iPad 2. Despite its featherweight profile, this tablet seems to be very well built from what we’re hearing. The screen is covered with ultra tough Gorilla Glass, while the body is manufactured from a mixture of magnesium and aluminium.

The report also states that the Xoom 2 Media Edition will feature an Infrared receiver to allow a wireless remote to control it. Perhaps the tablet will come preloaded with TV streaming software? We’re also told that a subwoofer will be built into the tablet, giving an improved audio presence over many other tablets currently available.

Engadget has managed to get a snap of the tablet in working order, showing us the settings page displayed on that 8.2-inch screen. Our eagle eyes have spotted that it will be running Android Honeycomb 3.2, and we can also see that ‘Fleming’ codename further up the screen.

Our eyes were also drawn to the notepad and pen icon, bottom right of the screen in the picture below. Perhaps this device will feature a touch pen or stylus for drawing and writing on the screen, a la the HTC Flyer? Tell us what you think it could mean.
