Skype has issued a new software update which will bring Video Calling to a host of Android Tablets and Smartphones, including the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the Acer Iconia Tab A500.
You can either download the app from the Market now, or if you’ve already got it installed you should find there is an update in the ‘My Apps’ section of the market which will install version 2.5.0.108.
Three of the best Android tablets – the Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Acer Iconia Tab A500 – have been missing the all important video calling feature until now, but now thanks to the update customers will be able to video call from their Tablet to friends with Skype on PC, Mac and other smartphones and gadgets.
The full list of Android smartphones and tablets which will get Video Calling from the update is as follows:
- Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1
- HTC Nexus One
- HTC Shooter
- Sony Ericsson Xperia Live with Walkman
- Sony Ericsson Xperia neo V
- LG Optimus Black
- LG Optimus 3D
- LG Optimus 2x
- Motorola Photon
- Motorola Droid 3
- Motorola Bionic
- Motorola Xoom
- Motorola Atrix
- Acer Iconia
These 14 devices join the original 4 smartphones (HTC Desire S, Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo, Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro and Google Nexus S) that were first to get Skype Video Calling. 17 more devices were added in August, putting the total of Android devices with Skype Video Calling at 41.
The update allows Video Calling using both Wi-Fi and 3G data connections, but be warned; Video Calling over 3G may cause you to incur data charges, as it is quite internet-thirsty.
It’s free and available to download from the Android Market as of now. We’ve tested it on our Acer Iconia Tab Wi-Fi model and it works brilliantly.
