Google launches Chrome Remote Desktop extension

Google have just announced a cool new remote desktop extension for Chrome, allowing you to connect to another desktop computer that is also running the same extension within the browser, making it ideal for helping out any friends or family that are having technical issues with their machine. There’s no need to worry about what OS they are using either, as the extension is capable of accessing computers running various operating systems including Windows, Mac and also Linux machines.

Currently the Google Remote Desktop extension is still in a beta phase, although it’s available to download now from the Chrome App store. The extension requires that users are present at both machines, with the user who you would like to connect having to confirm the connection – this will then generate a unique key which you will then need to enter into the Remote Desktop extension within chrome to establish the secure connection.

The requirement of needing to have users present at both ends means that it’s not really a suitable replacement to other remote connection software such as LogMein or GoToMyPC at the moment, however within Google’s description of the extension, it says: “The goal of this beta release is to demonstrate the core Chrome Remoting technology and get feedback from users. … Additional use cases such as being able to access your own computer remotely are coming soon”

So, as and when the extension develops, the ability to remotely access any of your other computers may prove to be a popular alternative to some of the current remote desktop offerings available at the moment.

If you fancy giving it a try, head on over to the Chrome App Store where it can be installed now.
