Five new Android smartphones are ready to take the U.S. market by storm, after big-name network AT&T just announced a new range to compete with the iPhone 4S.
Kicking off the CTIA Fall tech event in San Diego, AT&T unleashed five new Android smartphones including the Motorola Atrix 2 that we’ve seen leaked several times before. The other four are the Samsung Captivate Glide, Samsung DoubleTime, Pantech Pocket and the AT&T branded Avail.
Motorola Atrix 2
Our good friend the Atrix 2, previously codenamed the Motorola Edison, is now official. It features a large 4.3-inch qHD touchscreen, a 1GHz Dual-Core Processor, 8-Megapixel Camera, Full HD 1080p Video Capture, 8GB of internal storage space, 1GB of RAM, and 21Mbps HSPA+ Mobile internet speeds. Motorola have also redesigned the netbook-styled ‘webtop’ docking accessory which will turn the phone into an Android netbook.
Samsung Captivate Glide
The Samsung Captivate Glide resembles the Galaxy S II from the front, though it has a slightly smaller 4-inch Super AMOLED screen. Beneath the screen is a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, for those who prefer real keys to the onscreen keyboard. The phone is powered by a dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 processor (1GHz), along with 1GB of RAM. Around the back is an 8-Megapixel camera which is also capable of shooting Full HD 1080p video. Think of this one as a budget version of the Galaxy S II, plus a QWERTY keyboard.
Samsung DoubleTime
This handset, while still a smartphone, is pretty basic and aimed more at the low-end of the market. It’s small, compact and attractive in a bright white finish, and also has a clamshell-style flipout QWERTY keyboard. The processor is 600MHz, it has a 3.2-Megapixel camera, runs Android 2.2 (FroYo) and has a 3.2-inch touchscreen display which has a HVGA resolution.
Pantech Pocket
I’ve got to say, I’m strangely drawn to this odd little smartphone. It has more of a square shape compared to the long rectangular shape we’re used to with most other smartphones. It has a 4-inch SVGA screen with a 4:3 aspect ratio, rather than the widescreen 16:9 which is found on most phones now. Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) is the operating system onboard, as is 2.5GB of onboard storage to store your HD video recordings and 5-Megapixel snaps that can be taken with the rear camera.
AT&T Avail
Last but not least is an AT&T branded Android device named the Avail. It’s actually made by ZTE, who make decent quality phones such as the San Francisco for Orange in the UK and Europe. This handset is a candybar touchscreen with a 3.5-inch screen, 512MB of RAM, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, a 5-Megapixel camera and Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) software.
At the moment we only know the release dates for the Atrix 2, which we’re hoping will make it across the pond to the UK and Europe. October 16th is the release date, and the device will cost $99.99 on a 24 month contract on AT&T in the U.S.
