Very late last night, Samsung and Google announced their latest creation to the world. Finally we have official information on the phone that was previously known as the Samsung Nexus Prime.
The next in Google’s line of flagship Android devices will be made by Samsung, though it will be officially named the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. This phone will be the first to have the latest and greatest version of Android (which was also announced last night), Ice Cream Sandwich.
Specifications for the Galaxy Nexus are very similar to those we have seen before, including the list leaked by BGR. The phone will be available in two variants; a 4G LTE version for the U.S. and a GSM version for the rest of the world, including us Brits.
The main feature of the phone, asides from the fantastic new Android software, is the huge 4.65-inch display on the front. Just like its predecessor, the Samsung Nexus S, the screen is slightly curved which will make it a whole lot more pleasant to hold to your face on long calls. The screen is one of Samsung’s top of the range HD Super AMOLED panels, which will constantly display a 720p HD resolution.
Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus is set to become one of the sleekest smartphones around, with a profile of just 8.94mm thick. The handset weighs 135g, which is around the same weight as Apple’s iPhone 4S.
Under the hood is a 1.2GHz Dual-Core processor with 1GB of RAM to ensure everything runs fast and smooth. There’s also 16 or 32GB of inbuilt storage, depending on which model you buy, so plenty of room to hold all of your media.
There is a 5-Megapixel camera on the rear of the handset which is capable of shooting Full HD 1080p video at 30fps. The camera has an LED flash and autofocus technology to make taking snaps nice and easy. There is also a front-facing 1.3-Megapixel camera just above the screen for video calling.
As you’d expect, the phone has all the connectivity options you could ever want from a top end smartphone. You’ve got Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct (a new feature in Android 4.0) and NFC for contact-free data transfer.
Samsung have also packed in a host of sensors and other chips, including a Gyrometer, Accelerometer, Compass, Light Sensor and a Barometer. Yep, you heard it right, a Barometer, in a phone.
The Samsung Galaxy Nexus with Android Ice Cream Sandwich will be available early November. Verizon will be stocking the 4G LTE version Stateside, while we already know that Three will be stocking the GSM version in the UK.
