Netflix officially confirms plans for UK and Ireland launch in 2012

  • by

Netflix has officially announced plans to bring its online Movie and TV Show streaming service to the UK and Ireland early on in 2012.

The hugely popular service will make the jump across the pond from the U.S., where it has been hugely popular for a few years now.

Users will be able to rent TV shows and movies on their PCs, laptops, mobile phones and games consoles. Official apps are already available on Android and iOS (iPhone, iPad), as well as the option to stream content on both the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. Movies and TV shows can also be streamed on a PC or laptop by going to the Netflix website.

Netflix will be announcing more detailed information on pricing, available content and supported devices closer to the release date, which they say will be in “early 2012”.

With Blockbuster falling in the UK, there is a gap in the market that Netflix could easily squeeze into. The move will see Netflix go into direct competition with the likes of Lovefilm, whose movie rental and streaming services have been leading the market in the UK and Ireland for some years now, just as Netflix has been doing in the U.S.

We’re excited for Netflix to hit the UK, as Lovefilm needs a rival in the streaming and rental market, and a bit of competition can only be good for us consumers!
