If you happen to own a Boxee Box, you may be interesting in knowing that it would seem that Boxee are planning a new update for the media streaming box to include the ability to watch live free-to-view TV, which also includes HD channels when a special USB tuner is connected to the box.
The feature is part of a new major update to the Boxee platform, which is expected to be rolled out over the next few weeks.
The folk over at Gigaom have managed to get hold of unreleased build of the Boxee 1.5 update which prominently shows the new live TV feature on the Boxee home screen, and the configuration menu promises users that they will be able to enjoy their “favorite broadcast TV stations through Boxee’s unique social interface”.
When Gigaom tested the new feature by connecting an EyeTV One USB TV tuner, they were unable to get the Boxee Box to pick up any channels, so it’s not known whether a specific Boxee compatible one is needed, or there was a problem with the specific software build used.
If you’re interested in seeing how the new Live TV feature is integrated into Boxee, make sure you check out the video below.
Although its thoughts that the update will be available within the coming weeks, little is known about the USB TV tuner, and whether that will be made available for Christmas time. Boxee wasn’t available for comment when asked.
