The holy grail for all Android Developers has just been released – the source code for the highly anticipated version of Android – Ice Cream Sandwich.
There has been SDK (Software Developer Kit) ports so far, but nothing complete, and this is where it starts. Now we have the source code you will see a massive boom of Ice Cream Sandwich ports, meaning that if you “root” your Android smartphone, you can make it run the latest Android software – even if your phone manufacturer hasn’t officially provided an update.
I cant wait for a developer to get a port up and running on the Samsung Galaxy S 2 before Samsung’s official update comes out.
Developers love making Android run on devices it wasn’t meant to, and we can be sure that the HTC HD2 will get at least a partial port of the latest software.
One thing to remember is that Google are saying to wait till the source code is fully pushed out, due to its large size it is taking a while for the full source code to sync, and if you download it early it could end up being useless.
The source code also comes with a little taste of Honeycomb which is also hiddenin the source code download, however Google want developers to focus on getting ICS running on other handsets.
This software needs to be highly modified to run on our devices so just beware if you try to flash this you may brick your handset.
If you want to keep up to date with the progress head over to the XDA forums, you will be able to get the updates for your device there.
