Optimus 3D Gets Gingerbread Update Next Week

  • by

LG’s first flurry into the world of 3D was the Optimus 3D, which is a flagship handset that LG intended to use to compete with HTC’s EVO 3D.

Both the EVO 3D and the Optimus 3D handsets were (and still are) clever phones and came with glasses-free 3D technology. The experience of 3D in your hands is a strange one and the handsets work better than the Nintendo 3DS in our opinion, but it still takes a while to get used to.

LG disappointed some people with the Optimus 3D by releasing it running Android 2.2 (FroYo) when Gingerbread (2.3) was the standard that had been set at that time. Well, LG are finally ready to get some Gingerbread sweetness on the Optimus 3D. As well as the usual Gingerbread goodies, LG are throwing in a couple of other updates with the software upgrade.

The update will push the download speeds over 3G with HSPA+ to 21Mbps (increased from 14.4Mbps). The upload speed of the LG Optimus 3D will remain at 5.76Mbps however.

The update will also give some extra oomph with the video recording in both 2D and 3D modes, and you will now be able to edit your 3D videos right on the handset using some neat software LG has developed.

The 3D handset craze was one that never really took off, which is as shame as 3D technology has came a long way in the last couple of years, and it looks like it is definitely here to stay. I’m sure the Optimus 3D is not the last 3D smartphone that we are going to see and with the release of Android 4.0, there could be a whole new world of opportunities around the corner.

Do you have an Optimus 3D? We would love to know your thoughts and opinions on the handset and the new update.
