55-Inch OLED TVs From Samsung and LG to be Shown at CES 2012

  • by

Both LG and Samsung look ready to showcase their big-screen OLED TVs at CES 2012.

OLED TVs are going to be the next generation of home entertainment; they are going to take the notion of a thin TV to the next level. OLED stands for Organic Light-Emitting Diode, and there are two different types of OLED screens – PMOLED (passive-matrix OLED) and AMOLED (active-matrix OLED) both of these screens are going to give a brilliant picture,  the blackest blacks and the most vibrant colours.

The two companies are reportedly going for a pre-Olympics battle to get their biggest and best TVs into the world’s living rooms. Hopefully Samsung will be releasing an AMOLED screen of 55-inches, which giving the fact that is have seen how good the AMOLED display is on my Samsung Galaxy S 2, gets me very excited indeed.

LG has already said that it will launch a 55-inch OLED television in 2012, although LG Display CEO Kwon Young-soo reckoned that it would land in the second half of the year, missing London 2012 by a whisker.

However, rumoured competition from Samsung and the promise of serious sales inspired by the Olympic Games may have spurred LG on to get the sets out slightly earlier.

LG has already warned that its production run of large-screen OLED TVs will be low, and prices will no doubt be sky high, and unfortunately we can’t see Samsung’s offerings being any cheaper.

Still, with the Olympics kicking off in July 2012, there’s still plenty of time to win the lottery between now and then.

LG and Samsung are both huge in the TV industry and with both of them leading the races of the TV scene, it will be an interesting battle and one that I will be keeping a close eye on.
