Sony Ericsson were struggling for ideas when they decided to jump on the Android bandwagon, but their first attempt was kind of disappointing.
The X10 was released when Android 2.2 Froyo was starting to take over from Android 2.1 Eclair. Even though Froyo was predominantly the most used version of Android at that point in time, SE decided to release their new flagship handset running an outdated version of software, and there was no sign of an update anywhere.
The months went on, and anyone who bought an X10 felt a little left out as they were not able to use some of the features available on Froyo, for example Flash Player no longer worked on Android 2.1. This was when Google announced that Android was receiving another major update, and that we would be getting a new type of dessert as the name – Android 2.3 Gingerbread was born!
Furious users of the X10 were not happy they were now two versions behind on a device that was less than a year old. But Sony gave us some good news, announcing they would be upgrading the X10 to Gingerbread, skipping Froyo altogether! The update took what seemed forever to be released, but it was and finally the X10 had caught up with the pack and its full potential could be realised.
Recently however, SE have decided that when they update their current crop of Android devices to Google’s latest version of Android (Ice Cream Sandwich) they will only be updating handsets released in 2011, so the X10 is going to miss out again!
Well so Sony thought. Over at XDA- Developers there are teams of developers trying to get ICS running on as many devices as possible, and the X10 has just got a port! It is still in alpha and a work in progress but it is up and running.
You can check out the thread over at XDA here. It is very rare a SE handset gets an early OS update, but this is the bonus of having a hard working development community who will bring you the things the manufacturers say they cannot!
There are a couple of things I’m sure X10 owners would like to say to SE but I’m sure they will let it slide if this port fulfills its potential.
