It’s been a long time coming, but HTC’s debut tablet device, the HTC Flyer, is finally due to get the software update to Android 3.2 Honeycomb.
At the beginning of this week some French Flyer owners reported that their tablets were getting an update notification to install Android 3.2. HTC has now officially confirmed that the update will be hitting all Flyer Tablets in Europe over the coming weeks, via its Facebook Page.
The post reads:
“Ready for some ‘sweet’ news? The GSM version of the HTC Flyer tablet, available in Europe, is beginning to receive updates to Honeycomb beginning today! Honeycomb brings a ton of improvements to Android on tablets, including the latest version of HTC Sense for Tablet with enhanced Internet browsing, Mail, Calendar and more all optimized for the 7″ screen. Not to be outdone, the WiFi version of the HTC Flyer will receive its Honeycomb update soon, too! Stay tuned for more details.”
So if you’ve got one of the 32GB 3G + Wi-Fi Flyer tablets you should be among the lucky few to get the update first. Unfortunately those who opted for the cheaper 16GB Wi-Fi only model will have to wait a short while, though HTC tells us the wait shouldn’t be too long.
HTC launched its first Android Tablet earlier this year, though many were surprised that the company opted to use an older version of Android – 2.3 Gingerbread – that was designed more for smartphones, rather than the prominent Honeycomb version that Google had designed specifically for tablet devices.
Still, the Flyer is a great tablet, and with a 7-inch screen size it is much more portable than the majority of Android Honeycomb tablets on the market today. It features a speedy 1.5GHz processor, 5-Megapixel camera, 720p HD video recording and of course the very cool touch stylus which allows for handwriting support on the touchscreen.
The Honeycomb update will bring a host of ‘tablet-specific’ features to the Flyer, which we feel were missing due to Android 2.3 being used up until now – features such as full screen tablet-optimised apps and resizable widgets.
Updates are flying out now (pardon the pun), let us know when you get yours and what you think of it!
