UK Supermarket Asda To Launch Kobo eReader For More Than £20 Saving Over Kindle

  • by

The Kobo eReader will hit shelves of Asda, the UK supermarket and online retailer from this Friday, and in a direct challenge to Amazon’s lower-end Kindle, the Kobo reader comes in at just £67 – that’s a saving of around £22 from Tesco’s £89 asking price for the Kindle.

Tesco went all guns blazing with its Kindle promotion and boastfully declared the very reasonable price tag, but Asda today announces that it has intentions to whitewash the market during the busy gift buying period, less than three weeks prior to Christmas.

High street stationers WH Smith will also be stocking the Kobo, which comes complete with 100 pre-loaded books and wireless access to a catalogue of over one-million titles. The Kobo also packs hardware comparable to the lightweight Kindle. Smith’s however is unable to flex its pricing quite like Asda, therefore its Kobo matches up with the Kindle at nine notes with a penny change.

We in the UK are already paying more severely than our US friends for the Amazon Kindle, so with this in mind Asda’s Kobo stock should prove to be the prefered alternative this season. Avid readers and tech fans will get to choose from this Friday when the supermarket chain begins selling the Kobo reader.
