Archos’ G9 tablets – available in 8 and 10.1 inch sizes with both flash and mechanical hdd storage options – were released in the UK just a few months ago, and have become extremely popular thanks to great specifications coupled with Android Honeycomb at such a low price.
The French manufacturer made the announcement officially yesterday, albeit in French, proving its commitment to making their products the best they can be, and to its customers. Android 4.0 is currently only on one device; the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, so it looks likely that Archos G9 owners may be among the first to get the update.
The G9 tablet series brings Android Honeycomb on a budget, with some decent hardware for the money. The 8-inch 80 G9 will set you back £199.99 while the 10.1-inch 101 G9 costs £269.99. Both feature Texas Instruments TI OMAP 4 Dual-Core processors clocked at 1GHz, making them pretty speedy, also giving a good performance in games.
Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich will bring a series of new features and user interface improvements to Archos’ budget tablets. New features in ICS include the ability to create folders for apps on the homescreen, pick out widgets from the apps menu and much more. Google has taken features from Honeycomb that was already on the G9 tablets to make Android 4.0, so users will be pretty familiar with the look and feel by the time the update drops.
Archos said the update will be available during the first trimester (or quarter) of 2012, so some time before the end of March.
