It’s a momentous day for mobile gaming: One of the all time classic console games, Grand Theft Auto III, has landed on iPhone and selected dual-core Android handsets. Not only has it landed intact, it’s stormed the iOS charts while it’s been at it.
The game has been lovingly ported by developer Rockstar to mark its 10th anniversary. Ever facet of gameplay, along with all the missions, cut scenes, dialogues and – perhaps best of all – the radio stations has made it in, while the touchscreen controls have been handled incredibly carefully to offer a great sense of control.
It’s not climbed to such heady heights on Android yet, but within one day of release the iPhone 4 and 4S version has won itself the top spot on the App Store’s Paid-for list. At £2.99 a pop, Rockstar’s work will be reaping some serious rewards at this rate, so we can only hope for ports of Vice City and San Andreas.
The list of Android handsets that supports GTA III Mobile should grow over time, but right now it’s limited to the Galaxy Nexus alongside the Droid X2, HTC Evo 2, LG Optimus 2X and Motorola Atrix. It’s also on the iPad and the Acer Iconia, Asus Eee Pad Transformer, Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Android tablets.
While reports suggested that the Samsung Galaxy S2 wouldn’t be compatible, we’ve had it confirmed that it should run fine.
