Nintendo has bolstered its networking appeal with the portable 3DS ahead of a fully connected Nintendo Network set to go live later in the year when the upcoming home console Wii U is finally market ready.
With Nintendo introducing Wi-Fi connections in 5000 new public hotspots across 21 European countries, 3DS owners can more freely access network gaming for titles such as Mario Kart, as well as make purchases, watch videos and obtain free upgrades from the Nintendo eShop – which is set to offer a massive selection of versatile content in the latter half of 2012.
In an official press statement Nintendo tells us “Your Nintendo 3DS system will automatically connect to free-hotspot.com’s network in many of the biggest fast food restaurants and leading hotel chains across Europe including McDonald’s, Burger King, KFC, Subway, Ibis Hotels and Etap Hotels.”
“Once connected to the Internet, special and exciting content can be received automatically to your Nintendo 3DS system via SpotPass, even whilst your handheld console is in Sleep Mode. Some of the exclusive content you could receive includes unique 3D videos from the Nintendo Video service, notifications, extra content for your software and system updates, which can all be received without lifting a finger.”
To automatically connect to these services 3DS owners will need to have an updated system with Nintendo Internet Browser installed. This can be found by making sure your Wi-Fi is enabled and entering the System Settings from the Home Menu, selecting Other Settings, then tapping System Update. Once you have the browser installed you’ll soon be able to enjoy new and exciting Nintendo and third party content at many of your favourite hangouts.
