Do you love insanely addictive, fast-paced, combo-busting, touchscreen-swiping games on your mobile? Do you also have a penchant for bright colours, flashing lights and strange monsters? If so then we know just the game that you need in your life.
When we came across the title “Monsters Ate My Condo” in the App Store, we have to say we were slightly suspicious, but nevertheless our curiosity kicked in and we hit the purchase button. It proved to be a good move, because MAMC (that’s what we’re now calling it, okay? Okay) is brilliant. It takes elements of Tetris yet feels completely different, fresh and new, and of course, utterly addictive.
Though the title seems a little odd, it gives you an idea of the game’s nature. In the centre of the screen you have a stack of different coloured condos, or if you’re not American, flats, or apartments. Either side of the stack sit two monsters, of which there are four in total, and the idea is to swipe condos from the tower into the monsters’ mouths. Of course, it’s not quite that simple, but that’s the general gist of it.
The four monsters – brilliantly named ‘Boat Head’, ‘Reginald Starfire’, ‘Mr Shigoto’ and ‘Lord Ferocious’ – each have a different colour which relates to the four colours of the condos, and it’s advisable that you feed the monsters the corresponding coloured condo to keep them happy. If you keep doing so, you’ll activate a monster’s special power – which includes slowing down time, score multipliers and more – if you continually feed the monsters the wrong colours however, they get angry, and when they get angry they stomp around and knock your condo tower over, resulting in game over.
The main aim of the game is to get the highest score possible, which can be achieved through combos when you stack up multiple colours of the same condo. The game becomes pretty tactical when you’re flinging out condos in order to stack several of the same colours but trying to avoid feeding different monsters the wrong colour condos. If you stack up several of the same colour, the condos become bronze, silver or gold and are then worth more points when fed to the monsters.
Of course, as the game progresses things get faster and crazier. The tower of condos becomes like a game of Jenga, in that if you don’t fling the condos out quickly enough, the tower becomes lop-sided and wobbly. You don’t want the tower to fall, which adds to the intensity of the game, which we’re sure is worsened by the continual flashing of bright colours and inanimate objects.
Two game modes are available – Endless and Time Attack – and between the two there are 50 achievements to unlock which you can show off to your mates using either Apple’s Game Center or OpenFeint along with your mind-boggling high scores.
You can pick up Monsters Ate My Condo for just 69p now for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. Developers Adult Swim and PikPok have come up with an absolute cracker here, so be warned that you won’t be putting it down once you start.
