A new patent filling has been unearthed that suggests that Google is planning to integrate a new voice control system to work Google TV from inside and even outside the home.
In a similar way to Apple’s Siri, Google intends to let users control the device by using their voice via a smartphone or tablet application.
Its thought that viewers would be able to search content on Google TV, change channels and even ask questions about when certain TV show is going to be aired.
Once the commands have been issued – the information would be sent to Google’s cloud and then passed on to the TV, which would be connect wirelessly to the internet.
The most interesting part of the patent is the ability to control the device from anywhere as long as you have you Android smartphone or tablet to hand.
The filing states that “the provision of the query to the television may occur when the user is within a set distance of his home also (e.g., by determining with GPS functionality on the smartphone that he is within 1/4 mile of the home), and the television may be turned on automatically as he approaches the home, with the television tuned to a channel that is determined to be most relevant to the query.”
The patent also mentions that the voice control functionality could be used to stream music to the TV or to set-up playlists.
