Sony’s second Xperia smartphone has been rumoured, leaked and shown off more times than we care to remember, but we still haven’t seen any decent quality pictures of it. Finally, a kind soul has plastered many images of the ST25i ‘Kumquat’ online, alongside the LT26i, which we now know as the Xperia S.
The Kumquat is set to become the Xperia U – a smaller sibling to the Xperia S. The images show both handsets side-by-side, which shows off the size differences nicely. Sony has used the same style – the squared edges, the see-through illuminated band of touch buttons below the screen and the gloss black front.
When images of this quality and quantity start appearing on the web, it usually hints that the product is due to be officially unveiled soon, as if they were released any earlier, the perpetrator would likely get a wrap across the knuckles from the manufacturer.
From the photo comparisons, it looks as though the Xperia U will feature a 3.5-inch touchscreen and front-facing camera in the top right corner. Unlike the Xperia S, the Xperia U has a removable battery cover and detachable battery, so should the need arise; you’ll easily be able to perform a battery pull and reboot the phone.
The images show the device running on Android Gingerbread, version 2.3.7, although many believe that Sony will choose to ship the device with Android 4.0 on board. They haven’t chosen to do this for the Xperia S, though perhaps the extra time between the two devices being released gives the company a chance to prepare the update.
We’re pretty sure that Sony will be unveiling the Xperia U next week at the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona, so be sure to tune in then for the official low down on the ST25i, or Kumquat, or Xperia U – whatever you want to call it!
